My Name

September 10, 2009

Theme: "My Name"
Objective: Help the children to recognize their names and understand how truly special they are.

Choosing Time: Name Matching Game, Make Star Clip Magnets, Mr. Potato Head, Magnets
Lesson: Play "Name Game Song." Read Chrysanthemum. Discuss how Chrysanthemum was sad when her friends made fun of her name. What helped her feel better? Do your parents help you feel better when you are sad? At the end of the story, Chrysanthemum decides her name is absolutely perfect. Why? How should we treat others? We shared stories about the meaning of our names. We also shared stories of how we got our names. These are some of the fun things I learned:
Spencer means Steward. I added that steward means one who is responsible for others.
Leo was born on Father's Day and has the middle name, Jared, after his father.
Raeanna is named for 2 grandmas. I told her my middle name is Rae after my grandma. We have something in common.
Jacob is named for his grandpa.
Mitch's mom and dad really wanted a baby. They were so happy that Heavenly Father sent Mitch to them.
Daniel is named after Daniel in the Bible. He was sick when he was born. His parents wanted him to have a strong and courageous name to help him get better. (Mary, your words were so touching...I can't do them justice)
Grayce is named for her grandma. She has a "Y" in her name just like her daddy and her two brothers.
Nathan means Gift from God. His mom was really sick when Nathan was in her tummy. She almost died. She was so happy to have a special new baby. He truly was her gift from God.

Snack Super Helper: Daniel brought apple slices & stick pretzels. He offered a sweet and humble blessing. Thank you Daniel! The children are having a fun time pouring their own water for snack time. :)

Music: "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"

Movement: "Here we are together..."

Art: We discussed what a self-portrait is. I emphasized that each person has a head, eyes, ears, nose, hair, mouth, neck....I demonstrated a simple drawing. The children had fun making their self-portraits. [Notice the really big necks :) some of them drew]

Writing: Rainbow Names

We also finished our "All About Me" papers. I had fun listening to their answers. They are so proud of their drawings, height (approx. the best I could), weight, and answers!
