Letter "E"

October 1, 2009

Theme: Letter "E"
Objective: To allow the children to experience many things that have the "E" sound.
Choosing Time: Marbleworks, Blocks, Magnets, & a Big Box to Enter & Exit
Lesson: Rae helped locate the letter "E" off our alphabet chart. We made its two sounds. We looked at pictures of some things that start with the letter "E". One of these was an egg. I showed the class a basket of Easter Eggs & told them that inside each one was something that is born from an egg. We passed the basket around and let each child choose an egg to see what was inside. The chicks & chickens were not surprise, but the spider, snake, penguin, ladybug, dragonfly, frog, and turtle.

Snack: Nathan brought one of his favorite snacks today: Vanilla Wafers. They were yummy!

Science: We looked at 4 different kinds of eggs. Some were big & others were little. We noticed their different colors. We cracked open a brown egg & a white egg. They each had a white part & a yolk. The yolk of the brown egg was dark orange and stayed in a ball. The other yolk was pale yellow & very runny.
We learned that Experiment starts with an "E". We did many different experiments today with eggs. Everyone helped to either pour, stir, drop an egg, or put a lid on.
  • We are wondering what different liquids will do to our teeth? We put an egg into milk, OJ, & root beer. We will leave them in the liquids to see what happens. All of the children predict that each egg will look like the liquid it is in.
  • We want to feel what a Dinosaur egg was like. I passed around an egg for the kids to feel. The egg has a hard shell. We put the egg in a jar & then filled it up with white vinegar. We will wait one week & see what happens....
  • I showed the children a hard-boiled egg with the shell still on. I asked them if they thought it would float or sink in a jar of water. No one was sure what it would do. It sank. Then we added salt & stirred. Now the egg could float.Art: We painted pictures with egg yolks. We added a tiny bit of water along with some food coloring to the yolks. The egg yolk paint is nice & glossy.

Exercise
: We did some fun Exercises today! See if they remember "Line, line, circle, circle, square, square, square, square, triangle, triangle..."

Nature: It was time to let our ladybugs go. We took them outside and gently put them onto the Daisy & Zinnia plants.
